When Passion Becomes a Business: My Story as a Travel Advisor

Several years ago, my husband and I had a conversation about we wanted to do when our kids got older and moved out of our house and into their own.  I told him that I wanted to travel the US in an RV.   I still think of that to this day. Have you ever felt like your love for something could become more than just a hobby?

I think back to my younger days and remember going on vacation with my parents to many different places.   I can remember going to the Grand Canyon and being in awe of how big it was, but also how majestic it was.  A different trip I was lucky enough to experience was going to California and down to Mexico with my niece, my aunt and my grandma.   I loved going to Tijuana and getting to see a different culture there.  We had so many laughs on that road trip.   I am grateful for getting to take these trips, and spending time with my family.  I think that's really why I love to travel.  It allows time with my loved ones and getting to experience new things with them.  I wish I could do it all the time the time.   I think that's what lead me into the travel industry.

The decision to get involved in travel started about 30 years ago.  I knew that I wanted to travel then so I started working for TWE (Transworld Express). Working there allowed me to fly for free.   At that time, I loved being in the field near the airplanes and waving them in to park.  After I learned the field portion, I started working at the ticketing desk and that's when I knew travel could lead to exciting adventures.  There was never a dull moment at the ticketing counter.  I got to talk across the loudspeaker (exciting but scary at the same time).  Years ago at the ticketing desk the agent is taking tickets and boarding passes to allow them on the airplane.  I remember most people were excited to be traveling with their families going to different and new places.   Thats what I loved most about working in the travel business.  The capability of making people happy while they are traveling.

As I'm just starting this adventure, I realize that my excitement for the travel industry has shifted a bit.  Whereas before getting into the industry, I was interested only in the travel portion, now I am intrigued about travel and freedom.  I love the idea that I can escape for a few days and take pictures of new places showing people this is a place that you can go and experience new and different things.  I love the idea of trying a restaurant and sharing with people.  Or going to a new resort and telling people what to look forward to.  I get amped up over planning places for people to go or just booking places for people.

Starting something, you love isn’t always easy, but it’s always worth it.  The pictures below are just the start of my ongoing travel journey.   Please follow me on Facebook at Simple Escape or Tik Tok @simpleescapeswithmelissa.
