Reconnecting on the Road: Five tips to make the trip a success.

We all know that road trips in the beginning of a relationship can sometimes make or break them.  They aren't for the weak.  However, a road trip can also put a little magical spark of adventure back in a relationship too.  A little bit of prep work and talk through can set up a successful road trip.  Whether you’re empty nesters, a couple craving a little adventure, or simply looking for time away from the noise of daily life, a road trip offers the perfect opportunity to rekindle your relationship and create memories that last a lifetime.

Why Road Trips Bring You Closer

There’s a special kind of freedom that comes from hitting the road with someone you love.  When you’re on the road together, distractions fade. There’s no rushing to catch a flight or standing in long lines. Instead, you have uninterrupted time to talk, laugh, and dream together. These open stretches of time allow couples to have the kinds of deep conversations that often get lost in everyday routines.

For couples over 40, road trips can be a beautiful way to slow down and rediscover each other. At Simple Escapes, we believe travel should not only take you places — it should bring you closer.

Tips for Making Your Road Trip a Success

1. Plan Your Route — But Leave Room for Adventure

Map out your route and book your key stops ahead of time.  Structure helps, but don’t overplan. Leave space for detours — that hidden diner, a roadside antique shop, or a scenic overlook you weren’t expecting.  Skip the chain restaurants and try local diners, coffee shops, or food trucks.  We also know that a road trip without snacks is not a road trip.  Plan your significant other their favorite snacks.  A Sams membership can be your favorite place on road trips!   Here's a link for a membership special. https://trackcm.com/7ql/eI4t
Spontaneity is where connection thrives.

2. Use Drive Time to Reconnect

Turn off the distractions and talk.  Limit phone use and social media scrolling.   Ask questions, laugh about old memories, and dream about what’s next. Long drives create the perfect atmosphere for heart-to-heart conversations.  I also have a couples conversation starter that I have that I'm putting together.

3. Create a Shared Soundtrack

Music is one of the easiest ways to set the tone for your trip.  Make a playlist together filled with songs that remind you of your story. You’ll be surprised how music can bring emotions, laughter, and nostalgia back to life.  Also create a new list that you inspire changes in your life that you are going through or that you anticipate.

4. Rest Comfortably Along the Way

Long drives can be tiring, so having a comfortable place to rest is key.  Tired couples don’t make happy travelers. Choose hotels that feel comfortable and cozy, where you can unwind each evening.
Simple Escapes can help you plan overnight stays that fit your route and budget — so you can focus on enjoying the journey.

5. Let the Journey Strengthen Your Bond

When you travel by car, you face challenges — missed turns, rainstorms, long stretches of road.  Take advantage of a good rainstorm with a kiss in front of a road sign.
But working through them together builds teamwork, patience, and shared laughter.   Every stop becomes a story — a chance to explore together and support small communities.  Every story that you create deepens your bond.

Life moves fast, and sometimes relationships need space to breathe. A road trip gives couples that space — a chance to slow down, laugh at wrong turns, and see each other in a new light.  Talk about the beginning of your relationship and the fun you had,  talk about what you’ve learned since the beginning, and dream about what’s next.  You’ll be amazed at how much a few hours on the road can rekindle that spark.   It’s not about perfection; it’s about presence.
