When was the last time you truly slowed down with your partner—no phones buzzing, no kid to run to an activity, no job to respond to? It's probably been a while. One of the most overlooked ways to rekindle romance and reconnect is by taking a journey by train.
There’s something timeless, almost movie like, about traveling by rail. Train travel creates the perfect backdrop for connecting with your spouse. The journey is usually smooth and slow, allowing time for conversations and romance. I often think of train travel like they show in the movies. Sitting next to your loved one looking out the window at the fall colored leaves as you are laying your head on his shoulder. Talking and smiling at one another. I know cheesy right?
Think about how often your time together is filled with distractions—phones, emails, kids’ schedules, housework, and errands. A train ride pulls you out of that cycle.
Whether it’s a two-hour journey to a nearby city or an overnight ride across the countryside, you suddenly have dedicated time to focus on one another. Play a card game, share stories from your younger years, dream out loud about your future adventures—or just lean into the comfortable quiet. (shameless plug here...I'm working on creating a digital download card game for traveling couples) That uninterrupted time strengthens emotional intimacy, reminding you why you chose each other in the first place.
Couples have a tendency to bond through experiences and traveling together on a train can help create those experiences. Think about all of the sites that you can see while on a train. The beautiful landscape, exploring a new town, the sunsets and sunrises that you can witness. You see the same landscapes, hear the same sounds, and share the same little adventures. That sense of “we’re in this together” is powerful for deepening connection. It allows memories for years to come, and conversations that you can share with your children to show them that taking time to be with your significant other is important.
If you’re considering a train journey with your partner, here are a few simple ways to make it even more special:
- Choose the Scenic Route: Look for routes that highlight mountains, rivers, or coastline. The views add to the atmosphere.
- Make It a Surprise: Plan a short train trip as a gift to your partner—it’s thoughtful and creates anticipation.
- Upgrade If You Can: Sleeper cabins or first-class seating often add privacy and comfort.
- Disconnect to Reconnect: Put phones on airplane mode for part of the journey and focus on each other.
At the end of the day, train travel reminds us of something important in both love and life: it’s not just about where you’re going, but how you get there.
When couples step onto a train, they step into an experience that encourages slowing down, being present, and savoring time together. That rhythm—the steady motion forward, side by side—is a beautiful reflection of what love really is.
